The project notebook

A smoother start.
A better finish.

Straightforward notes to help turn a calculator result into a sensible shopping list.

Measure twice. Shop once.

A good finish starts here.

Three details worth getting right.

01 /

Paint: count every coat.

Wall area is only the beginning. Multiply by your planned coats, then divide by the coverage on your paint label. Rough surfaces and major color changes can need more paint or a separate primer. This tool estimates wall paint, not trim or primer.

02 /

Flooring: leave room for cuts.

A room’s area rarely matches a whole number of boxes. Add your chosen waste allowance, then round up to complete packs. Diagonal layouts, intricate patterns, and irregular rooms may need a larger allowance. Check the installation instructions.

03 /

Wallpaper: think in strips.

Area alone can underestimate wallpaper. Each full-height strip must fit the roll and any pattern repeat. This calculator includes 4 inches (10.16 cm) of trimming per strip and rounds strip length up to your entered repeat. Confirm the match type before ordering.

The useful little details

Before you open
the first can.

Transparent math. Fewer surprises.

How does the paint calculator work?

For a rectangular room: wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus your entered openings. Ceilings are not included; estimate them separately using length × width. Multiply by coats and your extra allowance, then divide by coverage per gallon or liter. The purchase suggestion rounds up to whole gallons or liters; compare with actual can sizes.

What if my room isn’t a rectangle?

For flooring, split the room into rectangles, calculate each section, and add their areas before rounding to boxes. For paint, measure each wall’s width and use the total perimeter. These simple calculators assume a rectangular room; complex spaces may need a separate manual estimate.

What does the material cost include?

Only the rounded material quantity multiplied by the price you enter. Prices default to zero so you can use a real local quote. Labor, tax, delivery, tools, primer, adhesive, underlay, and other preparation materials are not included.

Can I subtract doors and windows from wallpaper?

This tool keeps full-height strips across the wall, including openings, as a conservative planning method. Offcuts may cover small areas but pattern alignment can prevent reuse. Half-drop matches and multiple walls with different heights require a more specific layout; confirm with your wallpaper supplier.

Do you save my measurements?

No. Your entries stay in this page’s memory and reset on refresh. Copy or print your estimate to keep it. No account is needed and the calculator does not send your measurements to a server.
